jp of Houston, Texas US asks...

This question is a follow up to question 25058

Can a DFK in the penalty area be passed to a teammate before leaving the penalty area?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi
Any kicked restart within the penalty area by the defending team must leave the penalty area before it can be touched by another player and is in play.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Any free kick taken from inside the penalty area is not in play until it leaves the penalty area. No one, from either team, can touch/play the ball until it fully crosses the line.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

ALL free kicks leaving the penalty area must completely cross over the penalty area boundary line before the ball is touched by any other player or the kicker a second time. If this happens, the kick must be retaken

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

Sure, but unfortunately, the ball won't be in play because it was touched before it left the penalty area directly. Oops. Therefore, we retake the DFK and remind the players to let the ball exit the penalty area before anyone touches it again.
