Question Number: 25128

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 6/23/2011

RE: Competitive Adult

Jesai of Toronto, ON Canada asks...

This question is a follow up to question 23444

Hey Ref... In terms of goal celebrations, should a yellow card be issued if a player removes 1 of his boots?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jesai
It is not an offence to remove a boot during goal celebrations. However if the referee believes that the celebrations are excessive and that the player's action was deliberately done to delay the restart of play that could be a caution if the referee deemed it so.
Personally I would let it slide and if there was a delay add on the time.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

If this happened in my game, we wouldn't be waiting for the goal scorer to get his shoe back on before I gave the signal for the kickoff. He takes it off, he fixes it in his own time. No play until he gets his boot on. If he doesn't like that, he can go to the sideline to correct his equipment and I'll inspect it at the next stoppage.

That's enough of a disincentive so players won't do it again. No need for a caution.
