Question Number: 25215

Law 5 - The Referee 7/14/2011

RE: Rec Under 19

Leah of Thornton, Ontario Canada asks...

Hi,
There is a field in the area which is extremely hard. If a player falls they have the wind knocked out of them for several seconds. Many players and referees also complain that their feet hurt after doing a game. We have had extremely wet fields been deemed unsafe, but I was wondering when a hard field can be deemed unsafe?
Thanks,

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Leah
Hard playing surfaces would rarely if ever be a reason to deem a field unplayable. Unless the FOP was badly rutted with rough uneven ground it would be acceptable.
The referee could ask the League authorities to examine the field and to consider its suitability for playing games.

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

It's very rare for a field to be declared unsafe simply for being too hard, but it's certainly possible. I'd be more concerned about whether players can grip the ground with their studs or slide over it as one indicator.
