Question Number: 25245Mechanics 7/22/2011RE: varied Adult Ann Dobbertin of Wautoma, WI USA asks...Being a coordinator for a youth soccer program ages 5 to 13 I hire refs for all our games. For the youngest teams I use high school age students who need a little training in the most basics of how to blow a whistle, how to communicate a call, etc. Is their a video to use during my training session with beginner refs? I realize I can use an older more experienced ref to help teach but I need the consistency and availability of a video. Thanks for your time. Ann Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham The USSF has published several DVD's on specific referee issues (Offside; Persistent Infringement, Myths of the Game, Managing a Free Kick), but I'm not sure that they would serve your purpose. They supplement, rather than replace the basic information in a referee class. The closest video regarding referee mechanics is no longer available. The USSF had published a 'Guide To Procedures' on VHS tape, and some instructors converted that to DVD for their own classes. Online instruction is a hot topic, and there are lots of materials being tested throughout the country. The early ones, however, seem to focus on the laws of the game rather than the art of refereeing.
