Question Number: 25413

League Specific 9/11/2011

RE: travel team Under 10

Steve of vineland, new jersey us asks...

Can u/9 players slide tackle?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Steve
That is a matter for the competition rules set by the competition organisers.
In general U9 don't have enough motor skills to perform/evade a slide challenge and many competition organisers do not allow it. However if it is not a local rule and the U9 player does not commit any offence then play continues.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

U9's may be allowed to slide tackle under the local competition rules. Or they may be prohibited. You'll have to check your local modifications; if there is no mention of slide tackling, then they are allowed (per FIFA default).

However, they often don't know how to slide tackle properly, nor when they should and when they shouldn't.

They can but not very well
I would like to see slide tackles and headers outlawed until U12 but it won't happen and we'll continue to see players injure themselves.
