Question Number: 25502

League Specific 9/27/2011

RE: Adult

Chris of Albany, Western Australia Australia asks...

At a recent U17 medal presentation after grand final three player's on the team that lost have been called up before the associations committee for allegedly refusing their medal, spitting on their medal and throwing it on the ground and hitting it with a tree branch.
I am curious to learn if anyone knows of any rulings re similar behavior of players

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

Can't say I've come across anything like this. This could well be considered 'bringing the game into disrepute', and the penalties for such sentences are generally decided on a case by case basis. The competition regulations will stipulate the range of potential penalties.

These actions would have occurred well after the game was over, and thus would not be subject to sanctions such as cautions.

The competition authority may have something to say about the team's behavior, though.

Hi Chris
This is not a refereeing question but really a disciplinary matter brought about by poor behaviour of poor losers.
FIFA has its 'Fair Play' Code and it is an excellent document espousing all that is good in the development of good sportsmanship. These players would be better served trying to live up the ideal rather than acting in such a manner.
From what you describe most League would be entitled to sanction the players and their club for this behaviour. The sanctions could include suspensions, fines etc.
In the UK the punishment would be at the discretion of the Disciplinary Commission. Usually it is for a breach of the rule "A participant shall at all times act in the best interests of the game and shall not act in any manner which is improper or brings the game into disrepute or use any one, or a combination of, violent conduct, serious foul play, threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting words or behaviour."
At the professional level it would be usual for a 3 game ban and a hefty fine.

I would assume the competition would refuse to allow this team or maybe even this club to participate in future competitions. Such behavior is reprehensible.
