Question Number: 25520

Law 15 - Throw In 9/29/2011

RE: Rec Under 13

Delma Hudson of Rockingham, NC 28379 asks...

What is the rule in a throw-in situation if the ball does not enter the playing field? Would a re-throw be awarded or would the opposing team get the ball?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

If the ball never went in, the throw is retaken. (Note, in school games played under NFHS rules, the other team gets a throw-in.)

'Never went in' means no part of the ball ever was over the outside edge of the line. The ball doesn't have to land on the field to be in. It could curve over the line and then go back out and it was in.

Hi Delma
If a throw in does not enter the field of play or touches the ground before entering the field of play the throw in is retaken by the same team.
