Question Number: 25521

Law 3 - Number of Players 9/29/2011

RE: High School High School

Matt Swanson of longview, wa usa asks...

This question is a follow up to question 22046

So what's the penalty for refusing to substitute upon the referee's beckoning? Dissent? If so, to whom (coach, substitute, thrower)?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

I don't know if HS has the same rules, but in a game under USSF (USYS, AYSO) the procedure is that if a player refuse to leave the field, the ref restarts play without there being a substitution. The coaching staff will sort it out later - likely much to the dismay of the player who refused to leave.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Matt
Once beckoned on to the field of play by the referee the player must enter. See Rule 3.4.1
If he refuses to enter then that is a caution for the player for unsporting conduct.
Now the referee needs to look at how this has happened and the reasons as to whether any further sanction is required
