Question Number: 25542

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 10/3/2011

RE: Select Other

Chase Funke of Hamilton, OH USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 24457

Quick question, if the GK feet are outside of the Penalty area but the Ball is just on the inside of the penalty area, the GK can still pick up the ball as long as the ball remains in the penalty, correct?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Chase
You are indeed correct. The position of the ball is all that matters. When the ball is outside the penalty area including the penalty area line the goalkeeper may not touch the ball with his hand/s. The position of the rest of his body is irrelevant.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

The position of the ball is all that's important. His feet are immaterial. As long as the ball is inside the penalty area the keeper may handle it
