Question Number: 25546

Law 9 - The Ball in and out of Play 10/3/2011

RE: U12 Rec Under 12

Andrea Berg of Collins, Iowa USA asks...

The player is running toward the ball and it bounces up never hits the ground barley right outside the line, player was able to get to it while the ball was still in the air and kick it back in. Would this still be considered out?

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Whether the ball is out does not depend on it touching the ground. The referee must judge whether all of the ball was beyond all of the line - - an invisible plane that extends from the outside edge of the touchline or goal line to the 'top of the sky.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Andrea
The key here is the plane of the line not just the ground. So if all of the ball fully crosses over the outside edge of plane of the line it is out of play.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

This isn't basketball. When the ball is out, wholly outside the outer edge of the line, it's out. It doesn't have to hit the ground.
