League Specific 11/13/2011

RE: Competitive Under 11

Shannon Donaghe of Chula Vista, CA USA asks...

One of our players received a yellow card for Unsportsmanlike Behavior and then a red card was issued for Dissent. What are the consequences for receiving this red card? I have been told the player needs to sit out one game. If this is true, what happens when the next game is rained out? Does he need to sit out for the makeup game with that particular team or is it the next game that we are scheduled to play?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Shannon
FIFA has decreed that a player that is sent off in a game must be suspended for the next game in that competition or related competition.
A game that is rained out does not qualify as a game and as a result it cannot count for suspension purposes. Only actual completed games qualify towards the suspension.
Also it is a matter for the disciplinary panel of the League to set the suspension tariff for the sending off offence. One game is the minimum tariff and it can be more.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

A player can be shown a yellow card for unsporting behavior, a yellow card for dissent, and then a red card for receiving a second yellow card in the match.

The laws require that the player sit out a minimum of one match, but the league's disciplinary committee can do more depending on the circumstances. The suspension is for the next match actually played. A rain out does not count. For Presidio League, the line up sheet that is printed online during the suspension period will contain a red R next to the player's name.
