Law 5 - The Referee 1/14/2012

RE: competitive Adult

scott waugh of edinburgh, midlothian scotland asks...

if the game is abdoned due to the ref being assaulted who gets the points?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Scott
That is a matter for the disciplinary panel of the league to decide based on the competition rules. The panel will get a full report from the referee and it will decide based on the circumstances what should happen.
The competition rules could have options such as a replay, award the game to the team that did not cause the abandonment, accept the score at the time of the abandonment, forfeit the game for both teams etc.
The most common outcome is a replay if a significant part of the game was still to be played.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Goodness. If a referee has been assaulted, I don't wonder whether anyone should see s a benefit. My thoughts are with the referees and their families.
