Question Number: 25931Law 1- The Field 1/28/2012RE: Select Under 17 Rakshit of Mumbai, Maharastra India asks...What if the markings of the fields are washed away due to excessive rain,what is the ref. suppose to do..? Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright It's really a matter for the referee to determine on the day. He'll be the one to make the decision on whether the field is playable or not - but if he feels that he can't tell if the ball is in or out, or if the ball is in the penalty area or not, then it may well be best to call the game off.
Of course, before it gets to the point the referee should try and arrange through the ground official to have the lines remarked.
Even if big sections of the lines are missing, the referee may still decide to play the match if he feels it won't interfere too much with his judgement.

If the field markings cannot be made so the referee and his crew can tell when the ball is out of play, scores a goal, leaves or enters the penalty area etc., the referee has no choice but to abandon the match
