Question Number: 25933Law 15 - Throw In 1/29/2012RE: Under 19 Dave of Carlisle, Pa USA asks...A player taking a throw in throws the ball at his own goal. The goalkeeper handles the ball briefly in an attempt to p revent the ball from entering the goal. The ball enters the goal in spite of this. What is the restart? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Dave The referee plays advantage and allows the goal. The restart is a kick off.

To do so is a violation of one of the 4 restrictions on a keeper in Law 12. If the keeper does handle the ball, but it continues into the goal, the referee should now apply Law 5 and give the advantage - a foul occurred, but an advantage (a goal is always an advantage) is available for the other team. You know the restart from a goal, of course. Now, had said keeper tried to handle the ball and missed, we have a ball the left the field last touched by a defending player (the thrower), so you know the restart for that too. If the referee forgot about applying advantage and blew the whistle before the ball left the field, we can only punish the keeper's handling of ball as required under Law 12. Hint on restart - it is not a DFK.
