Question Number: 25954Law 5 - The Referee 2/7/2012RE: rec Adult Dennis of Ottawa, Ontario Canada asks...The home team goalkeeper takes a goal kick and it hits you on the back of your head as you are standing just outside the penalty area. The ball then rebounds into the home team goal. How do you restart the game? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Dennis As the ball is in play the restart is a corner kick. A goal may be scored directly from a goal kick, but only against the opposing team.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol The goalkeeper cannot score against herself at a goal kick. Therefore we have a ball that crosses the goal line, last touched by a defender, and no goal was scored - the definition of a corner kick. Incidentally, if the ball never left the penalty area and entered the rest of the field before crossing the goal line, the goal kick would be retaken because the ball was never in play.
