Question Number: 26026Law 15 - Throw In 3/4/2012RE: competitive Under 16 james of Lexington, SC United States asks...When taking a throw-in I know it should be taken within 1 meter front, back or off of the touch line where it left the field of play but what about the 'run up' to throw it in. Is there a certain distance you are allowed to 'run up' for the throw-in before it becomes illegal? The other night a player ran about 10 meters before he released the ball even though it was released from the point where the ball left the field of play and he did satisfy not only the 1 meter rule but also used proper technique. No call was made but I am curious. I searched and searched before I submitted this but could not find an answer. Thanks, I am always researching the laws and applications of the game and you are the best resource. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi James There is no restriction on how far a player can take on a run up to gain momentum at a throw in as long as a. The throw in is taken from the correct location b. The throw in is taken properly.
