Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham There is no written procedure. By tradition in the US, two peeps indicate half time, and three indicate the end of the match.

There is no written procedure. The important part is that the players know that the signal is for half time or for the end of play. Common practise is that the whistle is sounded a number of times.
It also helps when there can only be one reason why the whistle sounds which is the end of play.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Gary Voshol I've had a coach yell out, 'Now what?' at the first sounding of my whistle. And then, 'Oh' when I went on to another blast for the end of the half/game.
As noted, you may blow your whistle as many times as wanted to end the halves. But don't go overboard. 'Five is right out.'
