Question Number: 26204

Law 11 - Offside 4/19/2012

RE: Rec Adult

Tony Bielby of Auckland, New Zealand asks...

An attacker shoots, goalkeeper makes a save then another attacker (who was offside when the first shot came in) puts the ball in the net. Is tis a rebound? Offside or not?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Tony
No question this is offside. In Law it is covered under 'gaining an advantage by being in that position which means playing a ball that rebounds to him off a goalpost or the crossbar having been in an offside position or playing a ball that rebounds to him off an opponent having been in an offside position.
Most saves are rebound but there may be the odd situation where the goalkeeper has made a save, has control of the ball and then loses it which is not a rebound. A parry for example would not be a rebound.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

This is a prime example of 'gaining an advantage from an offside position' - - assuming that the goalkeeper only deflected the ball. If the keeper 'saves' the ball by catching it and then releasing it back into play, all attackers may participate in play regardless of their position.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Assuming the keeper did not control the ball with his 'save', the attacker was in an offside position when the ball was last played by a member of his team and cannot participate in play until offside resets
