League Specific 4/25/2012

RE: Adult

charles of garden grove, ca usa asks...

I noticed there was 2 more refs at next to goal post durning pro games.
what are their duties?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Charles
This is an experiment being conducted by UEFA with the introduction of two additioanl assistant referees AARs. The main duty is to help with hair line goal calls. Theses assistants can also help with other decisions inside the penalty in the same way as an AR. They cannot make offside calls

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The additional assistant referees were conceived as a way of helping with decisions on diving and penalty kicks. The first year of the experiment ended up with mixed results, but more leagues are trying them. As Ref McHugh notes, the goal/no goal decision is an important role on which they can provide valuable assistance to the referee.
