Question Number: 26262Mechanics 4/29/2012RE: Under 11 Kendra of minnetrista, MN USA asks...how many times should you blow the whistle for halftime? end of game? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol As many as you like; there is no specific requirement of any special whistle signal to end the half or game. A tradition has sprung up that the half ends with 2 whistle blasts and the game with 3. But that's just what some people do. One time as I hit the first blast, I heard 'What NOW!?' from someone on the sidelines who didn't think I was doing so well. Then with the second blast, 'Oh.'

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Kendra The accepted norm is to blow the whistle a number of times in quick succession usually three times. Players will know when it is approaching half time / full time so the quick series of whistle will confirm that. Also referees usually blow when the ball is being played away such as a punt, goal kick, ball in the air and therefore the whistle cannot be for anything else.
