Question Number: 26264League Specific 4/30/2012Abbey of Salem, USA asks...How old do you have to be to ref a soccer game? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Abbey There is no minimum age requirement for referees and assistant referees in the USSF Rules Pertaining to Referees . State associations may set the minimum ages for games played under their jurisdiction. A good rule of rule of thumb is that the referee should be at least one year older than the players he or she referees, but it is not a requirement. Also a little piece of advice. Refereeing requires good interpresonal skills incluind managing people, situations. If the candidate is too young he /she may not have the required skills to deal with difficult situations and they can be put off as a result. Only the young person and perhaps his / her parent can determine if they have the maturity to be placed in a position of responsibility. There is an age limit of 17 to become a USSF Referee Class 1
