Question Number: 26269

Law 5 - The Referee 4/30/2012

RE: Under 16

Ron of NY, Maine United States asks...

a call is made outside the box that results in a free kick.

the kick is taken and scored.

referee indicates goal, places ball in circle, and kick ensues.

moments after the ball is played the referee stops play and confers with AR's.

a decision is made to go back and have a dropped ball instead of the kick.

allow or take back the goal?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Ron
Once the kick off was taken with the agreement of the referee no decision can then be reversed. So the only possible decision in your scenario is to allow play to continue after the kick off.
If play has been stopped to deal with the situation then the restart is a dropped ball from where the ball was when play was stopped.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Once the kickoff has been taken, the referee no longer has the power to change a decision from 'goal' to 'no goal.' The referee instead must include the circumstances regarding the error in the match report. The league may take appropriate action based on the referee's report.

Since the kickoff was taken, and play was stopped by the referee to confer with the assistant referee. The restart will be a dropped ball.
