Question Number: 26279

Law 15 - Throw In 5/2/2012

RE: competitive Adult

HANS JABLONOWSKI of Columbus, MI USA asks...

If the throw in is taken from the wrong location. Is the throw in retaken by the same team or does the other team get it.
Is it the same for high school and USSF?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Hans
When a throw in is clearly taken from the wrong location the throw in is awarded to the opponents from the correct location.
If the referee wants to be proactive here he can advise the thrower of the correct location and to ensure that it is taken from that location.
NFHS and USSF do not differ on this.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

In most cases, the referee will hold up the throw and direct the player to throw the ball at the correct location. If so, the throw is taken (or retaken if the referee's direction and the original throw-in attempt coincide).

But, when the referee judges that the throw-in was taken from the wrong location, it is an infringement of Law 15. The restart is a throw-in to the other team at the correct spot for the original throw-in.
