Question Number: 26312

Law 13 - Free Kicks 5/8/2012

RE: Rec/Select High School

Chris Thomas of Fairfield, CA US asks...

Can a team take advantage of the quick kick provisions (of the free kick law) within their penalty area with opponents still in the area, or must the ref ensure that all opponents are outside the area before allowing the kick.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

The team can certainly take the kick quickly. The question then becomes whether the ball exits the penalty area directly, because if it doesn't (touches or is played by any other player before it leaves the PA) then we have to retake the kick. And that will not be a quick free kick.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Chris
The defending team can take a QFK inside the penalty area before all the opponents have exited the penalty area. The ball though cannot be touched by any player inside the penalty area and should that happen it is a retake
