Question Number: 26336

Law 13 - Free Kicks 5/15/2012

RE: Competitive Under 15

Theo of Cambridge, MA USE asks...

The referee awards what should had been an indirect free kick but he/she forgets to raise his hand to indicate that the free0kick is indirect and not direct. A goal is scored from this free-kick without anyone touching the ball except the kicker. Should the goal be allowed or not?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Theo
No a goal cannot be awarded due to the fact that the referee failed to make the correct signal. The indirect free kick is retaken with the correct IDFK signal being made.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The kick should be retaken. The goal is improper because the restart was an indirect free kick and the ball did not touch another player before entering the goal. Fairness requires that neither team be misled by the referee's improper signal.
