Question Number: 26362

Law 16 - Goal Kick 5/19/2012

RE: Adult

Alex of Inverness, Scotland asks...

When is the ball in play after a goal kick?
If the goalkeeper takes a short goal kick could a team mate step inside the penalty box pick up the ball and return it to the goalkeeper for the goalkick to be retaken?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Alex
The ball is not in play until it leaves the penalty area. In the case where a player picks the ball up inside the penalty area the referee could deem that to be delaying the restart of play and it is a caution. The restart is the goal kick.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

It will depend. Generally a player should never pick up a ball on the field unless the referee has blown the play dead. Since the ball must completely exit the PA directly from the kick before it is in play, if the ball had come to a stop, the ref should quickly blow the whistle to prevent any confusion and restart with another GK.
