Question Number: 26417

Law 17 - Corner Kick 6/3/2012

RE: Select Under 17

Ron Baart of Victoria, B.C. Canada asks...

Can you remove the corner flag to take a corner in a soccer game?

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

You may not. If the flag is in the way, the player simply has to find a better spot to put the ball. Players often seem to forget that they've got the entire arc to play with.

A referee would be within his rights to caution a player for such an action, but that would be up to his own interpretation of the incident and the law.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Ron
The corner flag may not be removed during play. Now one of the problems that I see in pre match inspections is the poor quality of corner flags. many are damaged particularly the ones with springs. Those flag tend to lie to the side or are easily moved in the wind so unless they are leaning away they can impede the kicker. All those items should be corrected by the home team before kick off.
With proper corner flags the matter does not arise.
