Question Number: 26423Law 5 - The Referee 6/4/2012RE: Intermediate Under 12 Phil of Tarzana, CA United States asks...This question is a follow up to question 26404 I'm wondering if you approve of a 4th option, as I had this happen with U10. It started with shoulder pushing, but both players became frustrated & started using their arms. It had gotten to the point very quickly where it would have been a foul, but I couldn't tell which one would be to blame. At that point, I yelled 'Hey, no arms.', but didn't stop play. Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright Definitely a good point Phil, and one which we didn't mention. Being proactive is always an option for a referee, and even when refereeing adults I'll often use my voice to manage players - 'keep the arms down!' and so forth. Even as an assistant I'll do that to help manage my area. It can help to minimise fouls - and if you do blow the whistle, it can help to sell the decision as everybody knows you've warned the players. Of course, it's not something you want to overdo else it will reduce the impact - but sounds like you handled that situation well. Good refereeing!
