Question Number: 26467Mechanics 6/17/2012RE: 3 Adult Radomir of Brisbane, Australia asks...Is there any situation that AR doesn't have to indicate BY FLAG that the whole ball went over the touch line? Thanks! Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Radomir When the ball goes out of play the flag is used to signal that by the AR and also the direction of the throw in. Clearly the direction of the throw in is important so the AR should make the appropriate signal at all times.

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham When everyone in the world knows that the ball is out of play, the assistant referee does not indicate ball out of play (flag straight up). When the ball leaves in the AR's quadrant, the AR simply indicates the restart (the direction of the throw). When the ball exits in the referee's quadrant, the AR mirrors the indication by the referee (if consistent with pregame instruction). The ball out of play signal is critical when the ball quickly returns back into the field.
