Question Number: 26518

Law 5 - The Referee 6/30/2012

RE: Intermediate Under 12

Phil of Tarzana, CA United States asks...

I have a question about advantage. Suppose you see a foul & call advantage, as there's a good scoring opportunity by a second attacker.

Now Attacker 2 is fouled & goes down.

1) Can you yellow card both players who committed fouls (assuming the fouls called for it)?

2) If both are DFKs, which foul location would you use for restart, first or second (or closest to goal)?

Thanks in advance,

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Phil
When advantage is allowed the referee is entitled to go back and caution the offender at the next stoppage. In this case the next stoppage is the foul on attacker 2 which is also deserving of a caution. So the referee would caution both players at that time.
The restart is from the 2nd foul location. You can only go back to the original location if the advantage did not accrue with the 2nd foul happening within the 3/4 seconds. Generally the 2nd foul location is more advantageous.
by the way I have seen a player dismissed for two cautionable fouls after an advantage on the 1st foul. The 1st foul was deserving of a caution, the referee played advantage and the player recovered to make a 2nd cautionable challenge. Rare but it can happen.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

1. It rarely is necessary for match control to issue two cautions when play is stopped. But, the referee has the power to do so.

2. Award the free kick at the spot that is most advantageous to the victim if the time between fouls is one or two seconds. You should stop play only for the second foul thereafter.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

1. Is it allowed to caution both players? Yes. Would you ever want to? Probably not. It would be a very rare occasion that game management would call for 2 cautioned here.
2.The restart is from the foul closest to the goal. This is not necessarily the second foul
