Question Number: 26535

League Specific 7/4/2012

RE: Adult

tenzin of shillong, meghalaya india asks...

suppose in a group they have same point and goal diffrence of minus 0 then how will we dicide

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Tenzin
That is a matter for the competition rules to decide. As an example where teams to be tied on the same number of points in the European Championship Group stage recently the decision to break the tie would be based on the following factors in this order
A. Head to head results among the teams in question
B. Goal difference
C. Higher number of goals scored
D. Higher number of goals scored away from home
E. Fair play ranking
F. Drawing of lots.
The reason for this process is that the competition has to be completed within a time frame with a limited amount of dates for games.
In the Premier League in the UK this is the rule to break a tie
" If at the end of the Season either the League Champions or the Clubs to be relegated or the question of qualification for other competitions cannot be determined because 2 or more Clubs are equal on points, goal difference and goals scored, the Clubs concerned shall play off one or more deciding League Matches on neutral grounds, the format, timing and venue of which shall be determined by the Board."
So in summary the competition organisers decide the rule which is then part of the Competition Rulebook

Each league is different. But, most provide for KFTPM or a coin toss as the last tie breaker.
