Question Number: 26561

Law 15 - Throw In 7/20/2012

RE: local comp Under 17

paul grant of strathalbyn, south australia australia asks...

hi. the rule book i have states that a goal can not be scored directly from a throw it, but does not say what should happen if the ball enters the net directly from the throw.(we have played on some pretty small pitches, so it could happen some day) i suspect it would be the goal kick or corner kick senario as per indirect free kicks entering the goal net. could you confirm or set me straight.
thanks
paul

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

This would be the same as if an indirect free kick is kicked directly into the goal - it would simply be a goal kick (or corner kick, if it's gone that way).

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Paul
If the attacking team throw the ball directly into the opponents' goal from a throw in the restart is a goal kick.
If the defending team do it in their own goal the restart is a corner kick.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

Hi Coach and thanks for the question.

It depends upon who threw the ball. If the thrower throws the ball directly into his own goal, a corner kick to the opponents is awarded.

If the thrower throws the ball into the opponent's goal, a goal kick to the opponents is awarded.

Answer provided by Referee Michelle Maloney

If the ball leaves the field over the goal line from a TI or an IDFK having not been touched by anyone other than the thrower or the kicker, then we have a ball that was last touched or played by one team. The restart will be a corner kick or a goal kick depending on who was the last player to touch it.

If it was the defending team who threw the ball out over their own goal line, it is a corner kick.

If it was the attacking team that threw the ball out over their opponents' goal line, then it is a goal kick.
