Question Number: 26639Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 8/17/2012RE: competive Under 17 bob of New York, New York USA asks...A defending player attempted to punch an attacking opponent that was near the penalty mark in the defender's half of the field, but missed. You stopped play. What is the proper restart? Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright Law 12 states a direct free kick is awarded if a player strikes or ATTEMPTS to strike an opponent. If it's in the defensive penalty area, then it's a penalty kick, no matter where the ball is (assuming it's in play), and you'd card the player as appropriate (almost certainly a red card).
