Question Number: 26671

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 8/22/2012

RE: competive Under 17

bob of new york, new york usa asks...

If a player purposely kicks the ball back to the goalkeeper but punches instead. what is the call because usually if the goalkeeper picked it up it would be an indirect free kick. I am thinking that it is the same.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Bob
Punching the ball by the goalkeeper on a deliberate pass to him by a team mate is deemed to be touching the ball with the hands which is prohibited under Law 12. the restart is an IDFK from where the 'handling' took place.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Whether the goalkeeper catches the ball or just hits it, it's the same result. The goalkeeper is prohibited from *handling* a ball that has been deliberately kicked or thrown to him by a teammate.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The goalkeeper is not permitted to use her hands when a ball is deliberately kicked by a teammate. The result should be the same whether the ball is punched or held.
