Question Number: 26698

Law 5 - The Referee 8/28/2012

RE: Competitive Adult

Harris of Someplace, Somewhere Canada asks...

This question is a follow up to question 26672

What is FIFA's ruling then on applying the Advantage Clause? Is it only applicable to Law 12?

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Advantage may be applied for any infringement of any of the laws that occurs by a player when the ball is in play. FIFA's interpretation and guidance has often referred to the use of advantage beyond law 12 (e.g., law 3).

Although US Soccer had been a proponent of the notion that advantage should only be used in Law 12 (using the concept of trifling for other infringements), that recently has changed. The USSF interpretation now generally conforms to the world view.

Hi Harris
Advantage can be applied beyond Law 12. USSF recently changed its position on advantage which can be viewed here

However it is not possible to play advantage on say an incorrect restart such as an incorrectly taken throw in or a ball that has not left the penalty area on a restart.
