Question Number: 26734

Law 7 - Match Duration 9/8/2012

RE: Adult

Ronnie Simpson of Newcastle, England asks...

In the premier league is there a cut off point time wise for a match result to stand if it has to be abandoned.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Ronnie
This a Premier League Board decision. Premier League rules state that the Board may order a League Match which for whatever reason lasts for less than 90 minutes to count as a completed fixture or to be replayed.
Generally the decision would be to replay the fixture and I am not aware of any PL game that has been abandoned where the score at the time was allowed as a result.
There has been five occasion in the Football League where abandoned games were not replayed and the results were allowed to stand.
The notable ones were the Bradford City disaster game, Man Utd v Man City, the year Utd was relegated where Utd fans invaded the pitch with 5 minutes to go hoping that the match would be replayed and the Sheffield Utd v WBA game in 2002 when Sheffield went down to 6 players when getting beat 3-0 with 8 minutes to go.
