Question Number: 26945Law 15 - Throw In 10/27/2012RE: Under 12 Stephen of hubbard, oregon usa asks... If the ball is kicked out of bounds in soccer on the sideline, how is the ball returned into the field of play? What rules must be followed to legally return the ball into the field of play? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Stephen The restart is what is referred to as a throw in. The ball is throw by a member of the opponents of the player who last touched the ball when the whole of the ball crosses the touch line, either on the ground or in the air. It is covered under Law 15 and a copy of the Laws can be downloaded from http://www.fifa.com/mm/document/affederation/generic/81/42/36/lawsofthegame_2012_e.pdf

View Referee Joe McHugh profileAnswer provided by Referee Jason Wright Ifthe ball goes out over the sideline, the restart is a throw in. If, say, the ball last touched a Blue player before going out, Red takes the throw in. To take a throw in, it must be taken from where it went out, the ball must be held in both hands, and thrown over the head in the way you're facing, using both hands. Both feet must be on the ground, and both feet must be either outside the field or touching the sideline. There are plenty of instructional videos on the internet teaching how to deliver a throw correctly.
