Law 16 - Goal Kick 10/27/2012

RE: Under 12

Stephen of hubbard, oregon usa asks...

If the ball is kicked out of bounds in soccer on the end line by the offensive (attacking) team, how is the ball returned to the field of play? What is this kick called?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Stephen
The restart is what is referred to as a goal kick.
The ball is placed anywhere inside the goal area which is marked with lines six yards from the goal line and goal posts. Any member of the defensive team can take the goal kick.

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

The restart is called a goal kick. The ball is placed anywhere in the goal area (the 6 yard box), and kicked by any member of the defensive team (though in higher leagues, it's usually the goalkeeper).

The ball is not in play (so, cannot be touched) until it completely leaves the penalty area (the 18 yard box).
