Question Number: 27054Law 5 - The Referee 12/6/2012RE: Under 15 Rajan of Van Nuys, California U.S.A. asks...The Red Team takes a corner kick, which deflects off the referee into the Blue Team's goal. What is the proper restart? I thought since the referee is part of the playing field that the restart would be a kickoff for the Blue Team however I have been told that it is a goal kick for the Blue Team. Please explain Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham It is a goal for the reason you state. It would not be a goal on indirect free kick since the ball must touch another player (touching the referee is not enough). Referees can get hit by the ball, but I cannot understand why a referee would be in a position on a corner kick where this actually could happen. Dennis

View Referee Dennis Wickham profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Rajan A goal can be scored directly from a corner kick and as you say the referee is just part of play so the goal must be awarded. Restart with a kick off and apologise profusely to the conceding team. BTW it does happen. See the attached video and the referee is in a terrible position which allow the ball to cannon of him into the goal. You will note his signal for the goal. Not sure what happened after that?? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0Z_6uy_rTI
