Question Number: 27085

Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct 12/27/2012

RE: Competitive High School

John Gaydos of San Luis Obispo , CA USA asks...

This question is a follow up to question 26993

When is is acceptable to make a wall?

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Whenever you have the time to do so. But remember, the other team (and the referee) are not obligated to wait for you to fashion your defense. That's why a quick free kick can often be very effective.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi John
The Rules makes no provision for the forming of a defensive wall. So it is up to the defending team to decide whether it has enough time to do so. So in the case of a quick free kick it is never possible for defenders to do so.
What does happen though is that when the attacking team wants the referee to ensure players are 10 yards from the kick that makes the free kick 'ceremonial' which means that the defending teams gets to set up its wall before the kick is allowed to proceed.
What should not happen is players rushing to the ball to prevent the quick free kick from being taken. That will result in a caution for the guilty player for unsporting conduct.
