Question Number: 27122League Specific 1/22/2013RE: Other Emily Stewart of columbia, tennessee america asks...What's the youngest age to be a soccer ref? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol That will depend on what your state will allow. I have heard of kids as young as 10 years old taking certification classes. Some state laws also limit how old people must be to work as a referee.

View Referee Gary Voshol profileAnswer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Emily In the UK the minimum age is 14. I understand in the US there is no overall minimum age and it is left up to each State. In the US a referee cannot become a Class 1 Referee until the age of 17. Younger referees can officiate at under 14 and below games only. My advice is to not start officiating too young and certainly not without the required life skills. When a young person starts too young they can become disillusioned very quickly with some of the challenges that face referees such as dealing with dissent, parents etc.
