Question Number: 27254

Law 15 - Throw In 3/16/2013

RE: Adult

Kerry Green of Adelaide, South Australia Australia asks...

This question is a follow up to question 27213

Is it an offence to throw the ball directly to your keeper? As far as I can see, there is no direct reference to the situation in Law 15. Law 15 seems to refer to the keeper touching the ball a second time, but this reference comes under the heading 'Throw taken by a goalkeeper'.

Can you clarify?

Answer provided by Referee Jason Wright

It's only an offence for the keeper to handle the ball directly from a teammate's throw-in.

The reference is found in Law 12, at the end of the list of keeper-specif offences (page 35 of the online LOTG).

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Kerry
The reason you won't find it in Law 15 is that it is in Law 12 as one of the indirect free kick offences.
So if the goalkeeper touches a throw in from a team mate the referee awards an IDFK to the opponents from where the goalkeeper touched the ball with his hands inside the penalty area.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

True. Law 15 doesn't forbid a throw being made directly to your keeper. Law 12 forbids your keeper from handling a ball thrown directly to him (or her) by a teammate.
