Question Number: 27320

Law 13 - Free Kicks 4/15/2013

RE: - Under 15

Kurt of Safi, Safi Morocco asks...

Dear Referee,

I'm a soccer (football) fan and would like to ask you a question. What is the proper restart if a goal has been scored from an indirect freekick?

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

The restart is a goal kick if the ball goes directly (without another player touching it) into an opponent's goal on an indirect free kick.

It is a corner kick if they kick the ball directly into their own goal on any free kick.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Kurt
The restart is a goal kick if the goal is scored by the attacking team.
In the modern game an IDFK 'goal' is quite rare due to the fact that IDFKs awards do not happen very often since the old 'obstruction' rule was removed from the Laws of the Game. Most free kicks are now direct with the manin exception of playing in a dangerous manner without contact between the players.

Answer provided by Referee Keith Contarino

A goal CANNOT be scored directly from an Indirect Free Kick. If an indirect free kick goes directly into the goal treat it as if the ball went over the goal line last touched by a member of the attacking team, so restart is a goal kick.

If the ball is kicked into the team's own net on any restart, the correct restart following this is a corner kick
