Question Number: 27580League Specific 7/6/2013RE: Pro Adult Santosh of Pokhara, Nepal Nepal asks...If two teams have same equal points and the goal score is also same in group stage, what will fifa regulation applies for this condition? Which team will qualify? What is procedure to make qualification? Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Santosh FIFA regulations state that if there is still a tie after points and goal difference in the group stage the next methods to break the tie are in this order a. Greatest number of goals scored. b. Greatest number of points obtained between the two teams in the group matches. c. Greatest number of goals scored between the teams in the group matches. d. Goals scored away from home between the teams count as double. After that if a tie still exists a play off game with extra time and penalties will be played at a neutral venue. By the way this order of tie-breaker application has not always been applied. While it was used in the 2010 qualifiers, the qualification for the 2006 World Cup used the head-to-head comparison prior to goal difference. If these rules had applied in 2006, then Nigeria would have qualified rather than Angola.
