Question Number: 27647Kicks From The Penalty mark 8/7/2013RE: Amateur Adult Humphrey of Mombasa, Kenya asks...During post match penalties, what would the ref's decision be when the ball hits the cross-bar and bounces back towards the penalty spot, ie. away from goal? The goalkeeper moves away thinking it is a missed kick then somehow the ball rolls on its own back into the net after some time. Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh Hi Humphrey The correct decision would be to award a goal.
By the way it has happened a number of times: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6-4vyrtWd8 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab3WF_e-J8M The penalty is only complete when the referee decides so and that is when the momentum from the original kick has been fully expended or the ball has gone wide or touched again by the kicker.
