Question Number: 27675

Law 5 - The Referee 8/19/2013

RE: Rec Under 15

Justin Bower of Carlsbad, California USA asks...

When reffing a game solo do I need to bring my flags and stuff?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Justin
When I travel to a game I bring every single piece of my refereeeing equipment even spare equipment such as spare flags etc. I can then cover every single eventuality that might occur.
Most games that I know of the equipment is never provided so my advice is to come fully prepared.

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

You should. As a solo referee, I often enlist parents/fans to act as club lines to help with the ball in/out decisions along the touchline. (You need to remind them that they are only to call in/out and may need to show them that out is completely across the line.) But, I only give them my cheapest flags.

Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol

Well someone's got to bring the flags for the club lines to use. It's unlikely to be the players or coaches, so it's up to you as the referee.

I understand some league rules where they always have club lines require the teams to provide the flags. But I've also heard that doesn't happen. Best to be prepared and bring your own equipment.
