Law 13 - Free Kicks 8/27/2013

RE: competive Under 14

jon schweikert of west sayville, ny usa asks...

A defender, taking a direct free kick inside his own penalty area, passes the ball to his keeper, but accidentally kicks the ball directly into his own goal. What is the restart and why?

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jon

Reasons why it a retake of the free kick:
1. The ball is not in play until it exits the penalty area on any kicked restart inside the penalty area. When the ball is not in play the restart does not change.
2. A team cannot score directly on itself from any kicked restart.

If the free kick as described was taken from outside the penalty area and kicked directly into the goal by the kicker the restart is a corner kick.
