Question Number: 27702

Law 4 - Players Equipment 8/29/2013

RE: Junior varsity High School

Jack Scribner of Falmouth, Maine United States asks...

I have a pair of metal soft ground studs and people have told me I am not allowed to wear them if they have metal studs. In the past I have never had problems but I don't know if it's a High school rule change or what. Thanks

Answer provided by Referee Dennis Wickham

Unless Maine recently adopted a change, metal (conical shape) cleats are allowed if they are found safe by the referee. Non-metal cleats are recommended. Talk to you coach about local requirements.

Answer provided by Referee Joe McHugh

Hi Jack
Most of the premier soccer shoes manufacturers in the world produce metal cleats and they do so because they are legal and not intrinsically dangerous.
They can however become damaged when worn on rough ground like concrete, gravel etc. which leaves sharp burrs or edges. That would not be allowed by a referee.
In addition some areas may introduce a local rule which prevents their use. Your coach should be aware on any local rule.
