This is a competition rule due to the size of the field of play and a way to encourage more passing, etc. I have seen loads of variations on this from not being allowed at all the goalkeeper not being allowed to kick across the half line on a drop kick.
You need to check with the competition rules. It will also be apparent quite quickly from watching any game what is acceptable or not.
