Question Number: 27974Law 16 - Goal Kick 11/5/2013RE: Classic / select High School Sue of Garner, Nc USA asks...If a goalie passes the ball to their defender on a goal kick, and the defender plays or touches the ball before the ball crosses the 18 yard line, what call should the referee make? Should the other team get the ball or should the goal kick get a redo? Or something else? Answer provided by Referee Gary Voshol The goal kick must be retaken, as the ball has never come into play. If it looks like this is a ploy to attempt to waste time, the player(s) could be cautioned for delaying the restart of play. But the better option is for the referee to add on time to the half to compensate for the wastage.
